The basis of a good kitchen design is function. The work triangle as it is called can help create efficient use of your kitchen work space. The right work triangle will make you LOVE your kitchen. As we all know form follows function and without the work triangle your kitchen simply won’t function well for you at all.
The work triangle consists of three points: the refrigerator, the cooking surface, and the sink.
All three of these points in the kitchen are highly used work areas and without the work triangle preparing a meal can become really difficult.
There are certain rules that as designers we try to adhere to, for instance each leg of the triangle should be between 4 and 9 feet, and the total of all three legs should be between 12 and 26 feet. If you have to walk too far from one point to the other it makes it challenging for you to carry that heavy pot of water from sink to range.
Another rule is that there should be no obstructions intersecting a leg of the work triangle. It wouldn’t be very efficient to have to go around an island to get that pot of water to the stove. Lastly, household traffic shouldn’t flow through any leg of the work triangle. We certainly, wouldn’t want a collision while carrying that heavy pot of water.
The work triangle is what makes your life in the kitchen easier and more efficient. Everything flows and all work areas are accessible which in turns helps the cook while preparing all of our favorite meals.
